Divine was not interested in being palatable. That was the whole point. Become the most unique, bold version of yourself you can possibly be, and then go further. Divine did that. Brave, extreme, unapologetic in every direction. And in being that extreme, Divine could point out the absurdity and hypocrisy of the culture in ways that a more polished, more "acceptable" performer never could.
We need more of that. Not everyone has to be Divine, obviously. But we need people who are willing to push past the edges of what's considered acceptable, who use their boldness as a tool to hold a mirror up to society. Divine did it with drag, with John Waters, with pure fearless commitment to a vision. That's a legacy worth celebrating.
