On this day, feminist and nonviolence advocate Barbara Deming died. Openly lesbian from age sixteen, she devoted her life to reinventing peaceful resistance and founded the Money for Women Fund to support feminist artists.

On this day, Madison, Wisconsin approved sick time and bereavement benefits for city employees with designated family partners, an early step toward recognizing queer families in municipal policy.

On this day, Ronald Balin died of AIDS at 53. He had founded the Washington, D.C. chapter of the Mattachine Society and was among the first group to picket in front of the White House in 1965.

On this day in 1995, President Bill Clinton signed Executive Order 12968, banning discrimination based on sexual orientation in government security clearances. It was the first executive order in U.S. history to include those words.
