On this day in 1909, dancer and choreographer Hermes Pan was born. Fred Astaire's legendary collaborator on the 1930s movie musicals, Pan was well known in Hollywood to be gay.

Event

On this day in 1924, Henry Gerber founded the Society for Human Rights in Chicago, the first known gay rights organization in the United States. Police shut it down within a year, but the seed was planted.

Event

On this day, Jane Addams received the Nobel Peace Prize. The first American woman so honored, she co-founded Hull House and the ACLU. Her life partner was philanthropist Mary Rozet Smith.

On this day in 1948, the United Nations adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Eleanor Roosevelt led the drafting effort, sustained by her beloved companion Lorena Hickok's lifelong emotional support.
