Event

On this day, the Reichstag debated a petition promoted by Magnus Hirschfeld urging revocation of the anti-gay Paragraph 175. Only the Social Democrats supported reform. The vote failed, but Hirschfeld's fight for justice never stopped.

1958
Event

On this day in 1958, the Supreme Court unanimously ruled in One, Inc. v. Olesen, protecting the First Amendment rights of ONE: The Homosexual Magazine. The first Supreme Court ruling on a gay issue opened the door for queer publishing.

1983
Event

On this day in 1983, a lesbian couple was denied romantic seating at a posh LA restaurant. They sued and won. The restaurant removed the section entirely rather than seat queer couples.

1992
Event

On this day in 1992, Out Magazine began publishing with a test issue, creating a glossy, mainstream platform for LGBTQ+ culture, politics, and community that endures today.
