On this day, filmmaker Donna Deitch was born. Her 1985 film Desert Hearts was the first feature to depict a lesbian love story with positive, respectful themes in a mainstream setting.

On this day, Mary Bonauto was born. Called 'our Thurgood Marshall' by Barney Frank, she argued Obergefell v. Hodges before the Supreme Court and won marriage equality for all Americans.

Event

On this day, members of GATE urged a Canadian Parliamentary Committee to drop all references to homosexuality from the Immigration Act. Two years later, Canada removed the ban on gay immigrants.

2015
Event

On this day in 2015, Secretary of Defense Ash Carter announced that the Military Equal Opportunity policy would now include gay and lesbian service members, expanding protections within the armed forces.
