On this day in 1551, Henri III of France was born. The last Valois monarch, he was known for his intimate relationships with male courtiers called the mignons. He was assassinated in 1589.

On this day, Randy Wicker organized what's considered the first gay rights demonstration in America, picketing a military induction center after gay men's draft records were leaked.

1970
Event

On this day, John Ware and Christabel Poll became the first gay man and first lesbian to come out publicly in Australian history. Their interview in The Australian launched CAMP, Inc., the country's first major gay rights organization.

1988
Event

On this day in 1988, openly gay diver Greg Louganis struck his head on the springboard during the Seoul Olympics. Despite a concussion, he completed his dives and won the gold medal by 25 points.
